Our members, all volunteers, are the heart and soul of our Heritage Society. For those interested in joining (and we hope that's you!) here's some background. There's an online application form at the bottom of the page.
The Society held its inaugural meeting on 15th April 2000. Our mission is to identify and preserve our island's cultural and environmental heritage. We believe the better we understand our past, the wiser the choices we'll make about our future.
We preserve local records and artifacts, run informative workshops and seminars, and organise public events to help build a knowledgeable, engaged community.
It's an annual island tradition to commemorate the coming ashore on our eastern beach, in 1799, by explorer Lieutenant Matthew Flinders. The Society organises an annual re-enactment of this event, as it was our first president Ted Jones who proved beyond doubt Coochiemudlo was the island Flinders cited in his log.
We're greatly encouraged by, and actively promote, the growing recognition that local indigenous Australians have been frequenting our island for many thousands of years. Many of our special events, like this year's Mangrove Festival, have participating Quandamooka artists and performers who add greatly to the sense of occasion.
If you'd like to help us realise our vision for the island, or simply support the spirit of our endeavours, we'd be delighted to have you aboard.
You can join as a single member, or include a partner in a joint membership. When you've submitted the form below, please pay your chosen subscription using the Buy Now button below the form, or by bank transfer as detailed.
Email us if this is a problem for you.Your application will be considered at our next committee meeting. We'll send your confirmation of membership, and the most recent Society newsletter. We look forward very much to having you onboard.
